Cancer Genetics

Cancer genetics helps to identify people who have an increased risk of cancer. Genetic information sources include biologic samples of DNA, family history of disease, physical examinations, and medical records. Cancer genetics knowledge is rapidly improving our understanding of cancer biology.

Generally, cancers are caused by a series of mutations that occur during a person's lifetime. These "acquired mutations" may be from tobacco, UV radiation, and other toxins and chemicals. These mutations are not in every cell and are not passed from parent to child.

Most cancers happen for reasons that are not fully understood. Today it is believed that when some genes are mutated, cancer may occur. Inherited mutations may be present in some people more than others, and even with similar environmental exposures these are simply more likely to develop cancer.
