Videocapsule endoscopy is now an integral part of the enterologist's toolkit, and can be useful in diagnosing diseases of the small intestine including Crohn's disease. Previously the small intestine could not be viewed. The camera is swallowed, and for 8 hours travels the length of the small intestine while the patient carries an external recorder. The physician may then download the images.
