The American Dental Association recognizes nine dental specialties Each specialty requires several years of formal training after completing dental school. These specialties are: orthodontics (teeth straightening); oral and maxillofacial surgery (dental extractions and facial surgery); pedodontics (children's dentistry); periodontics (gum disease treatment); prosthodontics or prosthetic dentistry (dentures, bridges and dental implants); endodontics (root canal therapy); dental public health (dental epidemiology); oral and maxillofacial radiology and pathology (oral and dental diseases). Specialists in these fields are U.S. Board Eligible and are given exclusive titles such as orthodontist, oral surgeon, pedodontist, periodontist, or prosthodontist after local requirements have been satisfied.
