Dialysis Facilities Directory
Hemodialysis is a treatment that filters blood through machines, when a patient has developed end stage kidney failure, and most of the kidney function has been lost. Dialysis removes waste products, salt and excess water so they do not build up in the body; it maintains safe levels of potassium, sodium and bicarbonate in the blood; and dialysis helps to maintain healthy blood pressure. Dialysis services can be performed in a clinic attached to a hospital, in private dialysis unit, or even at home.
Peritoneal dialysis is a different procedure where a dialysate solution is introduced into the peritoneal cavity using a catheter, and the patient maintains a usual routine of activity at work, home or school.
