Dietitians and nutritionists plan food and nutrition programs, also frequently supervising meal preparation and service. They play an important role in the healing and wellness programs by teaching healthy eating habits, as well as planning dietary changes such as salt reduction for those with high blood pressure, or reducing fat and sugar for overweight and diabetes.

Dietitians manage food service systems for institutions such as hospitals and schools, promote sound eating habits through education, and conduct research. Major areas of practice include clinical, community, management, and consultant dietetics. Community dietitians counsel individuals and groups on nutritional practices designed to prevent disease and promote health. Dietitians in management positions supervise large-scale meal planning and preparation, not only in hospitals and other health care facilities, but also company cafeterias, prisons, and schools. Consultant dietitians may work under contract with health care facilities or in their own private practice.
