Epilepsy Specialists

Epileptics have recurring seizures due to a brain disorder. They may lose consciousness and have violent muscle spasms. Causes for epilepsy may include illness, brain injury and abnormal brain development. Often the cause is unknown.

Brain scans and other tests are used to diagnose epilepsy. Medicines can control seizures for many people. Older, classic medications used to treat epilepsy include: Dilantin or Phenytek; Phenobarbital; Tegretol or Carbatrol; Mysoline; Zarontin; Depakene; Depakote, Depakote ER; Valium; other tranquilizers such as Tranxene and Klonopin. Newer drugs to treat epilepsy include: Felbatol; Gabitril; Keppra; Lamictal; Neurontin; Topamax; Trileptal; and Zonegran.
