Mental Health Centers Directory

Mental health clinics, hospitals and treatment centers can offer a variety of services, including access centers, case management, crisis support, crisis stabilization, domestic violence victim treatment programs, employee assistance programs, mental health day treatment, outpatient mental health, psychological testing, residential programs, residential respite, substance abuse & detox.

Mental health is not just the absence of obvious, disabling mental illness. People who are unable to function effectively and successfully may benifit from mental health care. The feeling of being capable and competent; the ability to handle normal stress levels; maintaining relationships; the ability lead an independent life; and the ability recover from difficulties -- all may be considered aspects of mental health.

In developed countries, 8 of the 10 leading causes of disability are mental illnesses. According to the World Health Organization, in a 1996 study conducted with the World Bank and Harvard University, the ten leading causes of lost years of healthy life at ages 15-44 were (in order): Major Depressive Disorder, Alcohol Use, Road Traffic Accidents, Schizophrenia, Self-Inflicted Injuries, Bipolar Disorder, Drug Use, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders, Osteoarthritis, and Violence.
