There are over 3 million nurses working in the US, including about 2.5 million RNs, 1/2 million vocational/practical nurses, and about 250,000 nurse practitioners. Projections are that the US needs to train over 1 million new nurses over the next few years in order to make up an expected shortfall.
Training, certification and degrees in nursing and specialty programs are available at hundreds of universities and colleges across the country, with nursing degrees available in every state and the District of Columbia. A RN can be achieved in 2-3 years of study, while an LPN or LVN usually takes about 1 year of study.
