Opticians Directory
Opticians fit eyeglasses, and contact lenses in some locations. Opticians fill prescriptions from ophthalmologists and optometrists. They may take eye and facial measurements to help with lens placement, and they should verify the accuracy of the finished glasses. Fitting contact lenses requires that the curvature of the patient's eye be measured, and usually examined with a special microscope.
In the US, license requirements vary. The American Board of Opticianry (ABO) gives an examination, which may be used in states where opticians must be licensed. Some states also require a state board exam. The National Contact Lens Examination (NCLE) allows opticians to deal in contact lenses in those states where licensing is required.
