A pediatric hematologist/oncologist treats children and adolescents with blood diseases or cancer. They work with young patients in both hematology (the study of blood) and oncology (the study of cancer) in children. Pediatric hematologist/oncologists are medical doctors who have completed 4 years of medical school; they must have completed 3 years of residency training in pediatrics, plus 3 years of specialized training in pediatric hematology/oncology

Pediatric hematologist/oncologists diagnose, treat and provide ongoing health care for children and adolescents with:

• Non-cancerous blood disorders affecting blood cells such as sickle cell anemia and thalassemia.
• All forms of childhood cancers, including like leukemia and lymphoma (blood cancers), along with solid tumors.
• Bleeding and immunodeficiency disorders, like hemophilia and severe combined immunodeficiency syndrome.

In addition, some pediatric hematologist/oncologists specialize in stem cell transplantation, which involves transplanting the type of cell from which blood cells develop to help help children who can no longer produce these blood cells on their own, and to restore normal blood production.
