Periodontists
Periodontists are dentists (DDS - Doctor of Dental Science) who specialize in gum disease or periodontal disease. They also may place dental implants. Periodontists not only treat gum disease, they also perform preventative examinations to detect early signs of the disease. Gum disease can be present and progress without obvious symptoms, like diabetes, cancer or heart disease. A gum examination including x-ray of jaw bones is the only way to make an accurate determination.
Causes of periodontal disease include: bacterial plaque, smoking or other tobacco, pregnancy, puberty, genetics, stress, medications, tooth clenching or grinding, diabetes, bad nutrition and other diseases.
