Physician assistants (PA), along with nurse practitioners, work directly under a doctor's supervision and may be the primary care providers who examine patients independently, form diagnoses and prescribe medication. Physician assistants are not medical assistants, who are limited to routine clerical and office jobs.
Regulations vary by state, although generally physician assistants must have at least 2 years of college and some health care experience, and complete a 2 year physician assistant program. They must also pass a national exam before being licensed.
