Podiatrists or foot doctors treat the foot, ankle and lower leg. They treat injuries of ankles and feet, infections and deformities, and they are essential to foot care for diabetics. They perform surgery, and also treat foot problems such as ingrown toenails, corns and arch problems, and they design and fit orthotic inserts and plaster casts to correct foot deformities. They also design custom shoes.
