Psychiatric hospitals (which may be know as mental hospitals, asylums, sanitariums or mental words) specilaize in treating patients who suffer from mental illness. Psychiatric wards provide similar care, but as a part of a larger hospital or medical center. Different types of psychiatric hospitals include open units, medium term, crisis stabilization, juvenile facilities, geriatric wards, halfway houses and hospitals for mentally ill prisoners.
Psychiatric hospitals usually try to provide a "normal" environment, free from loud noises and other sensory stimulation. Also they usually have procedures to prevent suicide by patients.
Psychiatric treatment is being integrated within the general health sector, more and more as the years go by. General hospitals with psychiatric wards and other outpatient programs are becoming more common, as asylums are disappearing.
