Respirator care practitioners, including respiratory therapists and respiratory therapy technicians, work with patients who have breathing and cardiopulmonary problems. Their patients may include premature infants, patients with chronic lung problems like asthma, as well as stroke, heart attack, drowning and trauma victims, plus post-surgical patients whose respiration has been depressed by anesthesia. They may use chest physiotherapy, oxygen mixtures or aerosol medicines.
Respiratory therapists may also work with pulmonary rehab, they may provide counseling to quit smoking, and they may also diagnose and treat breathing disorders during sleep.
