There are over half a million social workers working in the US, most of them in health care facilities or in government agencies. Social workers administer social service programs in departments of health and human services. Social workers may specialize in: child, family & school; mental health & substance abuse; medical and public health; or government program administration.
Social workers help people with family and community problems, and help them to develop the self-reliance they need. They may assist with child care and development, parenting, elder care, disabilities, depresssion, grief, and health care issues.
