Speech Pathologists
Speech pathologists, also called language pathologists, speech therapists, and in some countries phoniatrists, work with people who have communications disability. Speech pathologists diagnose and treat speech disorders, as well as language, voice, swallowing, fluency and cognitive-communication problems. They make use of many forms of communication besides speech, including reading, writing, signs, gestures and symbols.
Approximately one person in seven has some form of communication disability, and experiences difficulty in communicating or understanding others. Speech pathologists and therapists may work in kindergartens and primary schools,, nursing homes, hospitals and universities, as well as rehabilitation services, mental health services, community health programs or private practice.
