Tremor symptoms are often associated with aging, where the hands or head shake uncontrollably. If tremor symptoms are mild, treatment might not be necessary. When tremor symptoms interfere with quality of life, there are several treatment options available.

• Lifestyle changes may reduce symptoms of tremor. For example, reducing or eliminating caffeine and other stimulants from the diet may help. Physiotherapy and rehabilitation may also assist patients with ET.
• Drug therapy can benefit many people who have Essential Tremor symptoms. Many types of oral medication are available, including primidone, nadolol, propranolol, topiramate, benzodiazepines and methazolamide. Tremor medications can be prescribed separately or they may be used in combination.
• In deep brain stimulation (DBS),a medical device is implanted similar to a cardiac pacemaker, which delivers electrical stimulation to an area within the brain, treating the main symptoms of Essential Tremor. This technique is fully reversible.
• Thalamotomy, a form of neurosurgery which involves surgical destruction of cells within the brain's thalamus,can control tremor. This procedure lesioning is irreversible and non-adjustable, and risks damage to brain cells that control vision, verbal ability and swallowing.
