Osteopaths, known as osteopathic physicians (D.O.), have a more holistic approach to treating patients than medical doctors (M.D.). Part of osteopathy is OMT (osteopathic manipulative treatment), which involves examination and manipulation of body part, muscles, joints, tendons and ligaments. Osteopaths often focus on the back, however unlike chiropractors they may perform surgery and prescribe medication. Osteopaths must complete 4 years of osteopathic medical school following a 4 year undergraduate degree.
